"The pigeon shit was not the hiss"
So, instead of spending my Saturday night going out and having a drink and a dance and a good time like normal 23 year olds, I spend my Saturday night watching Hawking a drama about, shockingly, Steven Hawking. Why, I hear you ask? Well, aside from Benedict Cumberbatch, who is awesome and superfly, it was fully loaded with Tom Ward goodness. Well, I say fully loaded. He was in it for about a third, mostly towards the end, playing Roger Penrose.

And by 'eck, was it good.

So, to that end, I present

AKA: A picspam of theoretical physics and fetch jumpers

So basically, stuff happens. Stephen Hawking is diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, and then more stuff happens and he goes back to Cambridge. Then he goes into a pub and him and his friends have an argument about Cosmology versus...something else. And which would be better to seduce a woman with. And then Benedict Cumberbatch Hawking goes off to seduce a woman (played by Alice Eve) by talking about stars and stuff. And then there's a delightful little scene, the first time we see Penrose, and he's so brilliantly fetch.

Barmaid: Did you want another?
*long pause*
Hawking: Who is that?
Other dude: Roger Penrose. Brilliant brain. He'll be a professor within 3 years.
Penrose: Sorry, could I? Thing is, just then I was thinking about mathematics and not beer. Sometimes when I'm thinking in a number of different dimensions I can't come back very quickly to words and beer and whether I want more of it, it's because of the pictures in my head, I don't know how to make the words come. Do you see?
Barmaid: Pint or Half?
Penrose: Yes please.

So, the story continues. Hawking has a bath, and writes a letter, and goes to see Hamlet, and annoys some people, and then he goes to dinner at Sciama's house (Sciama is his PHD advisor dude), with Sciama's wife Lidia and their baby. Oh, and Penrose. And Tom Penrose cuddles Baby Sciama and ohhhh, my Lord, do I get broken by this. It's just basically adorable. And other stuff happens and they talk about theoretical physics. Oh, and there is epic slouching (Although not the most epic slouching, which happens later)

Penrose: Music is temporal. How can you pack a whole symphony into just one moment?
Sciama: Maybe it's because music is a way of thinking that goes way beyond language. Maybe that's what genius is. Thinking without time

Sooooo, then, more stuff happens. Hawking reads a paper and stays up all night writing on a blackboard, then goes to a lecture with Harry from Spooks Sir Fred Hoyle and tells Hoyle that he's talking a load of crap. Hoyle says he's not, and they have a bit of a barny about the whole thing. Sciama gets a bit pissed off at this and tells Hawking to actually go and bloody well do something for his PHD, cos basically all he's done so far is chop some tomatoes and stare at Tom Ward, and that just won't do. (Those aren't his exact words, but whatever). So, to that end, he decides to skip a lecture and go and play croquet with his girlfriend. She then tells him to go to the lecture, and it's a good job he goes, because there is lots of marvellous Penroseness there. Also, it is an outdoor lecture, and Penrose announces that he likes drawing pretty pictures with the chalk instead of writing words. Basically, the lecture is about singularities, which I looked up on Wikipedia and still don't quite understand, but it's linked to black holes and all that jazz, and I know about them from Doctor Who. Anywayyyy...

Penrose: I have something magic and wonderful to tell you about!
(NGL, this line totally makes me think of this *giggles*)

So then, some MORE stuff happens to Hawking, and he goes to a club and dances, and has a few drinks, and...other stuff that I can't remember cos I'm fast forwarding bits this time round. But then he and Penrose have a bit of a conflab in his office, and there is a magical backwards clock and a record player and a marvellous green jumper, so it's all good. Oh, and there is EPIC slouchy slouching in this scene. He's practically horizontal at the start of it. Which is something that I always approve of. Slouching Tom Ward, tea, battenburg cake and Benedict Cumberbatch. Now THAT is a party I'd like to be at

Hawking: This clock...
Penrose: It was fine when I got it, then I went to America and it started to run backwards. Stops my students getting too complacent about the nature of time

So THENNNN, they go to the train station, so that Hawking can get on his train back to Cambridge. Nothing much else happens for a couple of minutes after this, but Tom looks hot, so it's getting capped

Penrose: I'll see you in Cambridge

Hawking gets on the train and some Old Lady starts talking to him about trains. Old Lady complains that the train is going backwards. Hawking's brain makes things go clickwhizzbangworkywork and he suddenly realises something about backwards singularities and the beginning of the universe and things. So he gets off the train and yells for Penrose, and Penrose runs back to him. Penrose lends him some chalk, and Hawking draws things on the platform that basically explain how the universe came to be. I don't understand pretty much ANY of the physics in this, but I do understand gleefacing, and that is definitely what happens next.

Penrose:...A collapse in reverse?
Hawking: Which is...?
Penrose:...An explosion...
Hawking: BANG!

So then Hawking's girlfriend turns up, but she turns down his marriage proposal, sad times. So he blitzes his theory about all of this in some ridiculous amount of time and writes a whole dissertation on it. FEpic. And then then he takes it round to Sciama's and says that Penrose is fabbity and marvy, and Sciama reads the dissertation, and then Hawking's girlfriend turns up and decides that yes, she will indeedy marry him (Because this story blates has to have a happy ending. Blates). And then Sciama gets Hawking to go round, and Penrose is there reading the thesis

Sciama: The first three chapters are nothing special. The fourth...
Penrose: Mozart

And that's it for Penrose/Tom in this. The film has a happy ending, and was really good IMO-if you can get hold of a copy, definitely do!

Link to the album with all of the Tom caps in here. Feel free to nick off with them, but credit me if you do please!

Mmmm... pretty picspam. I must see this :P I loved your commentary too; you made me giggle (especially the link to the Cbeebies gif) :)

Thank you, I'm so glad you liked it! You really should see it if you get chance; I was a little disappointed that there wasn't enough Tom in it, but then again I'm shallow enough that there could be a whole programme just of his face and there wouldn't be enough =P Glad I made you giggle as well =D x

I LOVE you for this. Tom looks soooo cute with that baby....gorgeousness on a plate. Not sure about the green jumper/tie combo however. Is this a new movie/drama thing or has it been on the go a while?? Where can I watch it....dvd??
Little Miss Gemmakinsgem_pinkeh on August 23rd, 2010 08:16 pm (UTC)
I know right?! I looove the jumper, but then again I've always liked a good jumper =P It's definitely not new, in fact it's pretty old-it was first on in 2004, and was a one off TV movie. You can get it on DVD, it's 12 quid from Play.com and has a pretty long expected delivery date (1-2 weeks). I acquired it via slightly more dubious means ;-)

Aaaaaaalso, because I am brilliant =D

Aw, this was nice to look at. Ive never seen it, but it's Tom Ward so i probably should.
Little Miss Gemmakinsgem_pinkeh on August 23rd, 2010 09:41 pm (UTC)
Thank you! It is a pretty good drama, even without Tom being in it (Although I think Benedict Cumberbatch being in a bath helped. I'm nothing if not shallow). Definitely worth a watch though; Tom doesn't show up for about half an hour mind you. I've posted a Youtube link in an earlier comment to someone else that should have the whole thing on it

I love this movie, and Penrose is just a fabby character, more supportive the Sciama, whose supposed to to be supporting Stephen.

With my, very, basic understanding off broad physics theory I found the station/BANG! to be a bit spin tingley.

It's the moment he goes from Stephen Hawking struggling student, to Prof. Stephen Hawking LEG-END!!
There may have been a bit of stuff in between.

In other news are you going to the planned sherlockbbc London meet-up at the end of Jan?
I'll be going regardless, just be nice to see you again.

I basically only watched it for Penrose. My obsession with Tom Ward knows no bounds
Not going to the Sherlock meetup I'm afraid, am starting my next teaching job in a couple of weeks and am just going to be crazy busy right through till it finishes in February. Which is a shame, cos I totes wanted to go and flail with the fangirls =P

I'm not sure I've seen him in anything else, but I can see the appeal.

Oh that is a shame, but hey teaching!! :D

I'm glad that's working out for you, it's nice to see peoples dreams coming true.

Thank you so much for the introduction!
Hello, just want to say thank you for such wonderful photos and the introduction of this drama ^_^

I like Tom Ward since "The infinite World of H.G.Wells" and Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock is just fantastic!!
But I don't know they did performance together until I see this thread. It's just wonderful!
Really thanks.
